(9 Mar 2017) These days, it's possible to use your phone - and sometimes just your voice - to control everything from your TV to your lights, your thermostat and shades, even your car or medical device.
(At least, once you have gadgets that can listen.)
But the WikiLeaks allegation that the CIA commandeered some Samsung smart TVs as listening devices is a reminder that inviting the "internet of Things" into your home comes with some risk.
"We saw smart TV's and peripheral storage devices being targeted," said Alexander Heid, the chief research officer at SecurityScorecard, a company that monitors risk, and gives ratings regarding security.
How safe are your connected devices? Tread carefully, but don't freak out, experts say.
"We're finding the larger the company, the larger their attack surface," Heid said.
"There's more ways to get in and there's more people looking at them to attack them in some way, whether it's attacking the network, attacking the product, attacking their customers."
"With a lot of these devices, it's often times up to the user to implement them in a secure way. so, perhaps, one of the best ways to help aid this along is to make proper configuration and information available to the consumer," he said.
