Two infinite conducting plates meet at a 60 degree angle, and a charged particle is placed along the line bisecting this angle. How long does it take the particle to reach the point where the plates meet? Here we solve this problem by considering the force exerted by five image charges, then integrating Newton's second law.
Integrating the square root of x/(a-x): • Integrating the square root of x/(a-x)
Why the image charges form equilateral triangles: • A polygon of image charges: Conducting pla...
Why the method of images works (uniqueness theorem): • Uniqueness theorem for Poisson's equation
About me: I studied Physics at the University of Cambridge, then stayed on to get a PhD in Astronomy. During my PhD, I also spent four years teaching Physics undergraduates at the university. Now, I'm working as a private tutor, teaching Physics & Maths up to A Level standard.
