Artists who make sculptures of animals are also called animaliers. Over the centuries there are many sculptors who regularly made images of animals, but in the 19th century, this genre developed into a real specialty in France. Famous artists as Antoine-Louis Barye and Rembrandt Bugatti. Sculptor Loek Bos also has a great love for animals as the subject of his sculptures.Loek Bos ( The Hague 1946 ) was born and raised in The Hague and is a versatile artist. Besides being a sculptor, he is also a gifted draftsman and painter. After a short period at the seminar, Loek Bos decides to go to the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague. Here he has lessons from, among others, Ber Mengels and Go de Kroon. In 1977 he becomes a member of the Haagse Kunstkring. In addition to free work, Loek Bos produces a large number of commissioned sculptures for public space. Well-known, for example, are his life-size statue of Toon Hermans made for the city of Sittard and the Indonesian aunts, inspired and commissioned by writer Yvonne Keuls for the city of The Hague. In 1998 Loek Bos becomes a member of Pulchri Studio, of which he also becomes chairman in 2003. With his sculptures, Loek Bos stands in the characteristic 'New Hague School tradition of perfect figurative craftsmanship. In which each artwork seems to tell a story. Often peppered with humor, alienation, and sometimes a light form of surrealism. The starting point is an amazement for everyday life. What is special about Loek Bos's versatile oeuvre is that he rarely casts a series of his designs. Usually, he limits it to one copy. Loek Bos does have favorite themes on which he makes several unique variants.
