Artificial Intelligence, or AI, is the idea of making machines think and act like humans. The history of AI began in the mid-20th century. One of the first people to talk seriously about intelligent machines was Alan Turing. He asked an important question: “Can machines think?” He also suggested a test, now called the Turing Test, to check if a machine can behave like a human.
In the 1950s and 1960s, scientists started building simple computer programs that could solve math problems and play games like chess. At that time, people believed machines would soon become very intelligent. However, computers were slow and data was limited, so progress was not very fast. This period is sometimes called the “AI winter” because interest and funding decreased.
In the 1990s and 2000s, AI improved again because computers became faster and more data was available. A famous moment was when a computer made by IBM defeated a world chess champion.
Today, AI is part of daily life. Voice assistants, recommendation systems, and self-driving research all use AI. Companies like OpenAI are working to make AI more helpful and safe. The history of AI shows that progress takes time, but the future is full of possibilities.
