Описание: The smog in Delhi isn’t just from vehicle pollution or crackdowns on fireworks; the biggest reasons are geographic.
India’s elevation map has two mountain belts: the Himalayas in the north and the Aravalis and Vindhyas in the south. Between them lie basins, and Delhi sits in one of these basins.
Because Delhi is in a basin and the air tends to settle there, pollutants tend to accumulate.
In winter, the situation worsens: daytime heating makes air rise, but cooler air descends from above, creating an inversion layer that traps hot air, and the cooler air below blocks pollutants from escaping.
If the inversion layer forms, pollutants get trapped, with inflow from the Aravalis and the Himalayas and the ground cooling further sealing the basin.
By November–December, wind circulation weakens as the monsoon has left, so the accumulated polluted air tends to stay.
The result is a “block of air” over Delhi-NCR, where pollutants can’t easily move out.
Therefore, while reducing vehicle emissions and industrial emissions is important, the geographic setup ensures there will always be some level of pollution in that basin.
