What Is Happening?
Senator Mark Warner has introduced bipartisan legislation, known as the "RESTRICT Act," that aims to mitigate foreign threats to American national security by allowing the Department of Commerce to review, block, and mitigate software and hardware made by entities in adversarial nations, including China, Iran, Russia, and North Korea.

The bill would also allow restrictions that include a ban from the American market entirely. While not specifically targeted at TikTok, Warner noted that 100 million Americans use TikTok, and the company is what "everybody is talking about." Other lawmakers have previously proposed similar TikTok ban bills, but Warner's bill has gained more support.

TikTok has been negotiating with the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS) since 2019.
