“We are indeed pleased to be able to present such a large and comprehensive exhibition on the artist Caspar David Friedrich here in Berlin. After all, Berlin was the place where Friedrich had his artistic breakthrough in 1810. Since the Nationalgalerie opened it has brought together the most important works of Caspar David Friedrich, so it was very important for us to celebrate this anniversary.”

“Berlin and the Nationalgalerie - to say the least - is where Friedrich was rediscovered, because nobody knew him after his death. It was only in 1906, in an exhibition here at this venue, that he was presented again. And this exhibition is the first major exhibition on Friedrich since then. It really is time to rediscover the artist here.”

“After Albrecht Dürer, Caspar David Friedrich is certainly the most famous German artist in the world today. But that was not always the case, Friedrich was an artist star in his time but he was forgotten shortly after his death, but only rediscovered at the beginning of the 20th century. And every era finds something new in this artist, who gives us so much in terms of colour, light and conceptual depth.”

“This calm painter Friedrich still has a lot to say to us today, because his paintings are not only an emotional introduction to nature, but they also redefine the relationship between humans and nature. Back then, he painted them against the backdrop of a rapidly changing world. And that, of course, is where we find ourselves today.”
