In this fourth part of The Crime of Watering Down the Salafi Methodology, Shaykh ʿUbayd al-Jābirī رحمه الله addresses an important question:
Is it permissible to inquire about someone’s condition if nothing is known about him?
The Shaykh explains that when a person’s state is unknown, it is allowed — and sometimes necessary — to ask about his condition, especially if people intend to entrust him with responsibility, cooperate with him, or take knowledge from him. He supports this with clear evidences from the Sunnah, including the hadith of Muʿāwiyah ibn al-Hakam رضي الله عنه regarding the Prophet ﷺ testing the slave girl’s faith.
The Shaykh also refutes the false notion that “the default in every Muslim is justice,” clarifying that this contradicts the principles of Ahlus-Sunnah and the methodology of al-Jarḥ wa at-Taʿdīl (criticism and authentication). The scholars of the past examined and tested individuals to preserve the purity of the religion and protect the people from deviation.
