Last October, Olivia and I took a trip out to the US east coast, visiting several cities that most prominently included New York City, where we saw @StevenWilsonHQperform at the Brooklyn Paramount. Like my Time Stand Still video, I wanted to document my travels in music video format, and there’s no better song to set your NYC (or London) travels to than The Camera Eye by Rush from Moving Pictures.
Geddy Lee, Alex Lifeson and Neil Peart never performed this song for the longest time, presumably because of the technical and musical complexities of including a 10+ minute prog epic of unrelenting ferocity with multiple layers of synthesizers and sequencers along with tempo and time signature changes into an already jam packed setlist. When I saw them finally perform it on the Time Machine tour, I was blown away by how modern it sounded compared to their 70s epics like Hemispheres and 2112. It has always been one of my favorite Rush tunes, right up there with YYZ and Subdivisions.
I approached this cover similarly to the other Rush covers I’ve done by expanding the song’s sonic layers with more guitars, more synthesizers and vocal harmonies while staying true to its core sound. This cover was also an exciting opportunity to use a range of new plugins I acquired during last month’s Black Friday sale: Mantra by Neural DSP, which helped Olivia’s voice cut through the mix, UAD Ocean Way Studios Deluxe, which was invaluable in getting punchier drums, guitars and bass, and UAD A-Type Multiband Dynamic Enhancer, which was great on the snare, toms and backing vocals.
It doesn’t have a chorus, a hook, or anything that resembles a conventional song structure, even by prog epic standards. And I love The Camera Eye for all those reasons, along with how Rush somehow managed to evoke the feeling of a large, sprawling concrete jungle through their songwriting.
