Absolutely! Let's craft some Sea Striker Sputnik Surf Sinkers to help you hold your ground against the toughest tides.
Sea Striker Sputnik Surf Sinker DIY
This recipe focuses on replicating the unique "Sputnik" style sinker, known for its wire arms that dig into the sand or mud, providing exceptional grip.
Yields: 1 Sinker Prep time: 10 minutes Assembly time: 5 minutes
Ingredients:
Lead fishing weights (old ones you want to recycle or scrap lead)
1 Eye screw or a sturdy wire loop (e.g., from a coat hanger, bent into a loop)
4-6 pieces of stiff wire (e.g., 16-20 gauge galvanized steel wire, copper wire, or stainless steel wire), each about 4-6 inches long
Heat-resistant gloves
Pliers
A metal can or pot suitable for melting lead (e.g., an old soup can, a cast iron pot)
A heat source (e.g., propane torch, campfire, electric hot plate - use with extreme caution and in a well-ventilated area)
A sinker mold (specifically one designed for Sputnik or "wire-arm" sinkers, or a simple depression in sand/clay)
Equipment:
Safety glasses
Long-sleeved shirt and pants
Well-ventilated outdoor area
Instructions:
Safety First: Ensure you are in a well-ventilated outdoor area. Wear your safety glasses, heat-resistant gloves, and protective clothing. Lead is toxic, so avoid inhaling fumes and wash your hands thoroughly afterward.
Prepare the Lead: Place your lead fishing weights into the metal can or pot. If using scrap lead, break it into smaller pieces.
Melt the Lead: Carefully apply heat to the bottom of the can or pot. Slowly melt the lead. It will turn into a liquid. Maintain a consistent heat to keep it molten.
Prepare the Mold: If using a Sputnik sinker mold, ensure it's clean and ready. If creating a simple mold, make a depression in damp sand or clay that will accommodate the molten lead and the wire arms.
Assemble the Wire Arms: Take your 4-6 pieces of stiff wire. Bend each piece in half using pliers, creating a loop at the bend. These loops will be inserted into the molten lead.
Insert the Eye Screw and Wire Arms: Once the lead is fully melted and liquid, carefully insert the eye screw into the mold, ensuring it's positioned correctly for line attachment. Then, insert the bent ends (the loops) of your wire pieces into the molten lead, spacing them evenly around the intended perimeter of the sinker. The wires should point outwards and slightly upwards from the lead.
Pour the Lead: With extreme care, pour the molten lead into the prepared mold, ensuring it envelops the eye screw and the inserted ends of the wire arms. Be cautious of splashes.
Cool and Remove: Allow the lead to cool and solidify completely. This usually takes a few minutes. Once cool, carefully remove the sinker from the mold. The wire arms should now be firmly embedded in the lead base.
Finishing Touches: Inspect the sinker for any sharp edges on the lead or wires and smooth them down if necessary. Ensure the wire arms are securely attached and can be bent slightly if needed to achieve the desired "digging" angle.
Your DIY Sea Striker Sputnik Surf Sinkers are now ready for action!
May these Sputnik sinkers keep your bait exactly where you want it!
