Can I Use Wired Contacts on a Qolsys IQ Panel 2?

The two built-in terminals on the IQ Panel 2 System can be used with normally closed hardwired contacts only. If a user just needs to add a couple of hardwired contacts, connecting them to these terminals is usually the perfect option. But unfortunately, this will only provide an effective solution for two hardwired contacts. If a user intends on setting up additional contacts, or if they don't want to run a wire directly from the sensor to the system.

Another option is to use a wireless transmitter with a hardwired contact. A wired contact will connect directly with the wireless transmitter, and the transmitter will send a signal to the system so that it can communicate. Certain wireless contacts double as transmitters so that they can be used in this way. But keep in mind that the wireless transmitter will need to work at the 319.5 MHz wireless frequency to be used with the system. Other frequencies will not work with the standard version of the IQ Panel 2.

However, the most popular option using hardwired sensors with the Qolsys IQ Panel 2 is to used a wired to wireless converter. Qolsys manufacturers the IQ Hardwire 16-S for this purpose. This module will support up to 16 wired sensors and allow them to communicate with the system wirelessly. Each sensor will program in with the system as a wireless sensor. And since the IQ Hardwire 16-S is an "S-Line" device, it will utilize rolling code encryption when communicating with the system. Qolsys also offers the 8-S, which only supports up to 8 hardwired sensors, as well as unencrypted versions of both these sensors. The wired to wireless converters will support both normally open and normally closed devices. However, they will not support life-safety sensors, such as smoke detectors or carbon monoxide detectors.

Please note, the Honeywell 5816 and the 2GIG DW10 that Joe mentions support only Normally Closed wired contacts. These sensors operate at a different frequency than the 319.5 MHz frequency used with the Qolsys IQ Panel 2. Therefore, the will not work with system, unless a converter is used.
