‘সুদূর ঝর্ণার জলে’। এই উপন্যাস সুনীল গঙ্গোপাধ্যায় নীললোহিত ছদ্মনামের আড়ালে লিখেছিলেন, কারণ উপন্যাসের নায়ক ‘নীলু’ ওরফে নীললোহিত উত্তাল ষাট সত্তর দশকের এক বিশিষ্ট সময়ের তারুণ্যের প্রতীক। ১৯৬৩ খ্রিষ্টাব্দে আয়ওয়া বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ে ইন্টারন্যাশনাল রাইটিং প্রোগ্রামের সহ-প্রতিষ্ঠাতা কবি পল হ্যামিল্টন এঙ্গেল-এর আমন্ত্রণ এবং বৃত্তি পেয়ে এই কর্মশালায় যোগ দেন সুনীল। এখানেই ফরাসি যুবতী মার্গারিট-এর সঙ্গে তাঁর বন্ধুত্ব হয়। মার্গারিট-এর সাহচর্যে ফরাসি সাহিত্যের সঙ্গে পরিচয় হয় সুনীলের।
