Expanding the Yellowstone Universe Through the Eyes of a New Leader
The growing world of Yellowstone has officially crossed over to network television with the premiere of the CBS series Marshals. In a recent discussion regarding the show's debut, actor Logan Marshall-Green shared insights into how this spinoff balances the gritty, character-driven legacy of the Dutton family with the fast-paced structure of a law enforcement procedural.
A New Chapter for Kayce Dutton
Marshals picks up roughly one to two years after the conclusion of the original Yellowstone series. The story follows Kayce Dutton, played by Luke Grimes, as he attempts to find a new sense of purpose following the massive life changes he endured at the Yellowstone ranch. Seeking a fresh start, Kayce joins an elite team of U.S. Marshals, bringing his unique skills and complex history into a new arena of justice.
Logan Marshall-Green stars as Pete Calvin, known as Cal, the leader of the Marshals unit and a man with a shared military history with Kayce. Their bond, forged during their time as Navy SEALs, serves as the foundation for Kayce’s recruitment. Cal recognizes that Kayce is a man in need of a mission, though he may not yet fully understand the weight of the "Dutton legend" or the darkness that follows the family.
Balancing Legacy and New Narratives
One of the primary challenges for the series is maintaining the DNA of the Taylor Sheridan-created universe while adhering to the format of a CBS crime drama. Marshall-Green noted that while the show honors the history of characters like Kayce, Thomas Rainwater (Gil Birmingham), and Mo (Mo Brings Plenty), it also aims to be accessible to newcomers.
Interestingly, Marshall-Green chose to remain largely "ignorant" of the full Yellowstone backstory. By only watching the pilot and avoiding the rest of the original series, he aimed to mirror his character’s perspective—a man who knows Kayce the soldier, but is only beginning to discover Kayce the Dutton. This intentional gap in knowledge creates authentic tension on screen as Cal slowly uncovers the "not so pretty" reality of Kayce’s past actions.
Authenticity in the Great Outdoors
To maintain the visual grandeur associated with the franchise, Marshals is filmed on location in Utah, specifically around Summit County and the Thousand Peaks Valley. These are the same sweeping landscapes that defined the early seasons of Yellowstone. Marshall-Green emphasized that shooting in these environments—rather than on a backlot—is essential to the show's identity. The physical demands of riding horses through mountainous terrain help the actors transition into the roles of modern-day "cowboys and SEALs."
Beyond the Badge
While the procedural elements involve tracking down criminals and handling high-stakes standoffs, the show places a significant emphasis on Indigenous stories. Marshall-Green highlighted the importance of showcasing the strength and leadership within the Broken Rock community, ensuring that these narratives remain a central pillar of the storytelling rather than just a backdrop for the action.
As the first season progresses, viewers can expect the show to move away from a strictly linear format. Through the use of flashbacks and deepening interpersonal conflicts, Marshals seeks to prove that while the setting and the job have changed, the ghosts of the past are never far behind.
