The Women of Amphissa (1887)
Lawrence Alma-Tadema
This painting captures a striking moment from Greek history: a troupe of dancers from Delphi, weary after performance, accidentally spend the night in Amphissa, a city at war with their own. At dawn, they awaken to find themselves surrounded — not by soldiers, but by the women of Amphissa. Forming a silent, protective circle, these women chose not to hand the dancers over to the men, but instead to guard them.
Alma-Tadema, famed for his meticulous archaeological accuracy, fills the canvas with sunlit marble steps, detailed architecture, and the delicate garlands still woven into the dancers’ hair. The result is more than historical reconstruction — it is a meditation on solidarity, mercy, and the quiet power of women.
The symbolism runs deep: the sleeping dancers represent vulnerability and innocence; the Amphissan women embody strength, guardianship, and compassion; the marketplace—normally a site of trade and politics—becomes a sanctuary of humanity.
