Statement Issued by CWGE
It is an understatement to say that this is a difficult moment in time, as we are awaiting the verdict of Derek Chauvin’s trial for the killing of George Floyd, as we’re grieving the loss of Daunte Wright in Minnesota, Adam Toledo in Illinois, Tyrell Wilson in California and countless others. We at the Center for Women and Gender Equity((CWGE) believe that black lives matter and we join voices in condemning the police violence that has resulted in these and other incidents. In the words of Martin Luther King Jr., we believe that “injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.”
The CWGE, in collaboration with campus partners address the topics we explore through intersectional lenses because we understand that you cannot address gender inequity without also addressing racial inequity, racial injustice as well as issues such as transphobia, homophobia, xenophobia and more. In working with our colleagues and friends in the Black Student Union, and the Student Coalition Against Rape and the Campus Assault Response Team, we began crafting the program Perceptions: Getting Beyond Victim Blaming Culture last fall. The vision of this program is to look at the relationship between perceptions, stereotypes and victim blaming culture, and the ways that such things as interpersonal violence, sexual assault and racial profiling are connected.
Although this program has been on the schedule for months, we believe the timing is extremely relevant and invite you to join us Wednesday, April 21, 2021 at 7pm on https://stmarys-ca.zoom.us/j/95746777507
