A ten-second video of ocean surface wave evolution, with color indicating wave slope. This segment was acquired in the Pacific Ocean using a polarimetric camera. The wobbling of the camera field of view is due to the slight motion of the platform, the R/P FLIP. We quantify this motion using an inertial measurement unit and use it to properly reference our imaging footprint in space.
Ocean surface waves are crucial mediators of air-sea fluxes, impacting everything from weather to climate to the transport of buoyant material (e.g., plastics or oil). By measuring wave slope fields like the ones shown in the video, we are able to estimate the energy input to the surface layer of the ocean resulting from wind forcing.
