Since beginning its scientific operations in 2007, the Japanese scientific drillship Chikyu has advanced our understanding of the oceanic crust, deep microbial life, and earthquake hazards. At the same time, it has brought together researchers from around the world, becoming a place where learning happens at sea, collaborations are forged, and careers take shape.
Told by the people who experienced it firsthand, this short documentary shows how Chikyu helped turn the seafloor around Japan into a gathering point for an international Earth science community.
