Rare in the UK but an enthusiast SUV in the USA that's commonly supercharged to make some crazy power figures and in doing so, upgrading away from the traction limiting open differentials to Wavetrac LSDs.

The open differential limits traction and grip by sending power to the wheel with the least grip when traction is lost, when this happens the traction control aggressively intervenes and limits power, this slows down acceleration and when traction control is off it makes the rear end very unstable.

With the Wavetrac LSD upgrade fitted power is sent seamlessly to the wheel with the most grip, maximising traction and allowing you to control the car much more easily and consistently, even when you want to powerslide it.

This particular customer is preparing chose the Wavetrac LSD for his Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 over the Quaife thanks to its patented design features which allow it to outperform the Quaife in multiple areas by solving a couple of design flaws.

The first design flaw is that the Quaife, and similarly designed ATB LSDs perform like a standard open differential when axle load is lost, this happens when cornering heavily (suspension unloading), wheel lift or wheel slip. When this happens the Quaife and other ATB LSDs send power to the freely slipping wheel, just like the standard open differential. To solve this the Wavetrac uses a patented "wave hub" assembly which generates internal load which allows it to continue to work in those conditions, improving performance and driveability.

The other problem the Wavetrac solves is a reduction in performance over time. Where the Quaife and other ATB LSDs run the pinons directly on the housings, which over time reduces friction inside the LSD, the Wavetrac uses lifetime warrantied carbon fibre bias plates. These bias plates create a consistent friction surface for the entire life (read lifetime warranty!) of the differential, meaning the Wavetrac will perform just as goon on mile 1 as it will in 100,000 miles!
