Vancouver's diverse and eccentric food scene is one for the books. The city is much smaller than its Eastern Canadian sisters, but pulls a much bigger punch. Vancouver is a city renowned not only for its stunning scenery but also for its eclectic and vibrant culinary landscape. From upscale eateries to quirky cafes, the city’s neighborhoods each bring their own unique flavor to the table.

Vancouver's Little Saigon is a designated business district located along Kingsway Street between Fraser and Knight streets in the Kensington-Cedar Cottage neighborhood. The area, historically part of a major thoroughfare connecting New Westminster and Vancouver, has long been home to a significant Vietnamese community and a concentration of Vietnamese restaurants, bakeries, beauty salons, and specialty shops.

The re branding of this stretch of Kingsway as "Little Saigon" was the result of a grassroots campaign led by members of the Vietnamese-Canadian community, who sought to formally recognize the area's cultural identity and contributions.

The initiative gained momentum in 2011 when a petition with 3,000 signatures was presented to Vancouver City Council, advocating for the name to honor the heritage of the community, many of whom fled South Vietnam after the end of the Vietnam War in 1975. The name "Saigon" was chosen by many community members due to its strong nostalgic association with their homeland, as the city was renamed Ho Chi Minh City by the communist regime following the war.

Despite initial controversy, with some members of the Vietnamese community—particularly those from the North—feeling excluded or concerned that the designation reopened old political wounds, the name was officially approved. The official designation was celebrated on May 12, 2013, with a parade and ceremony attended by Kerry Jang, who had championed the motion.

The event was marked by South Vietnamese nationalist symbols, including the pre-communist national anthem and flags, which further highlighted the division within the community.
Since its official launch, the area has been marked by a dedicated street sign and branded banners along the corridor. The rebranding has successfully attracted tourists and increased visibility for local businesses, although it has also brought challenges such as increased garbage and parking issues.

The area is now widely recognized as a vibrant cultural hub, particularly known for its exceptional Vietnamese cuisine, including Banh Mi sandwiches and Pho, and is often compared to other international Little Saigons in places like California and Melbourne.
While the name remains a point of contention for some, it stands as a testament to the enduring legacy and resilience of the Vietnamese-Canadian community in Vancouver.
