This trail delivers a real mountain workout — expect a steep, steady ascent with switchbacks, sparse desert scrub, and breathtaking open views of the New Mexico wilderness, an out-and-back adventure that climbs over 3,100 feet to meet the Manzano Crest Trail near Bosque Peak! 🏔️☀️🌵Total trail length is 8.2-miles, and I decided to do three miles out for a total of a 6 mile hike.
This is a Fall or Spring hike do to the fact that when hiked in the summer there is little shade, this one demands plenty of water, sunscreen, and determination. 💪 Estimated hike time: 6–6.5 hours round trip.
🚗 Trailhead Tip: The road to the Encino Trailhead can be rough and bumpy, especially after rain. A high-clearance vehicle or truck is recommended — take it slow and drive carefully!
