This hymn was written in 1851 by Matthew Bridges, an Anglican minister who later converted to the Roman Catholic Church. He wrote this hymn after being inspired by the “exaltation and many crowns of Jesus” described in Revelation 19:12.
Growing up in the Methodist Church, this was one of the hymns we would sing often during church service. I felt it is an apt hymn for Easter as it celebrates Jesus's victory over death and his glorious reign.
The hymn's lyrics evoke a sense of spiritual joy and celebration, reflecting the hope and promise of eternal life that Easter offers.
*Lyrics*
Crown Him with many crowns,
The Lamb upon His throne;
Hark! how the heav’nly anthem drowns
All music but its own!
Awake, my soul, and sing
Of Him who died for thee,
And hail Him as thy matchless King
Through all eternity.
Crown Him the Lord of Love:
Behold His hands and side;
Those wounds yet visible above
In beauty glorified.
All hail, Redeemer, hail!
For Thou hast died for me;
Thy praise and glory shall not fail
Throughout eternity.
Crown him the Lord of life,
Who triumphed o'er the grave,
And rose victorious in the strife
For those he came to save;
His glories now we sing
Who died and rose on high,
Who died eternal life to bring,
And lives that death may die.
