The Seoul City Wall, also known as the Seoul Fortress Wall or "Hanyangdoseong," is a historic fortification that once encircled the city of Seoul, South Korea. Built during the early Joseon Dynasty in 1396, the wall was originally constructed to protect the capital, Hanyang (now Seoul), from invaders and to define the city’s boundaries.
Stretching for approximately 18.6 kilometers, the Seoul City Wall runs along the ridges of four mountains surrounding the city—Bugaksan, Inwangsan, Namsan, and Naksan. The wall was made of stone, wood, and other materials available at the time, and it features a series of gates, watchtowers, and signal fire mounds, which were strategically placed for defense and communication.
The most prominent gates of the wall include Sungnyemun (Namdaemun), Heunginjimun (Dongdaemun), Sukjeongmun (Bukdaemun), and Donuimun (Seodaemun), each facing one of the cardinal directions and serving as key entry points into the city.
Over the centuries, portions of the wall were destroyed or fell into disrepair due to wars, urban development, and natural wear. However, significant efforts have been made to restore and preserve the wall, especially in recent years. Today, large sections of the Seoul City Wall have been restored and are open to the public, offering walking trails that provide a unique way to explore both the historical and natural aspects of the city.
Hiking along the Seoul City Wall offers stunning panoramic views of Seoul, with the contrast between the ancient fortifications and the modern skyline creating a striking visual experience. The wall also passes through several culturally significant areas, including traditional villages, temples, and museums, making it a journey through both Seoul’s history and its contemporary life.
The Seoul City Wall is a testament to the city’s long and storied past, and it stands as a symbol of the resilience and continuity of Seoul’s heritage. For history enthusiasts, hikers, and anyone interested in experiencing the blend of nature and history, exploring the Seoul City Wall is a must-do activity.
