When your dog performs the final desired behavior once but doesn’t repeat it, don’t panic! That first success is a huge step, especially if you’re using shaping or capturing.

Here’s how to handle it:

Mark and Reward Generously: When that first success happens, make a big deal out of it! Use a clear marker (like a click or “yes!”) and give a high-value reward. Maybe even a jackpot (a few treats in a row) to let your dog know that was exactly what you wanted.

Give a Break: After a big win, dogs sometimes need a mental reset. Take a short break (30 seconds to a minute), then try again. Don’t rush to repeat right away.

Lower the Criteria Slightly: If your dog doesn’t repeat it, they might not fully understand what earned the reward. Go back a step—reinforce approximations or parts of the behavior again to build confidence.

Watch for Frustration or Confusion: If your dog starts offering random behaviors or seems stuck, it might be time to end the session on a small success and revisit it later.

Stay Consistent and Patient: Learning takes time, and one success means your dog is close! Stay calm and keep reinforcing the process.
