The Five-and-Dime Store Where Every Kid Spent Their Allowance

There was a little store on Main Street in almost every small town in America. Narrow aisles. Wooden shelves. A glass candy counter up front that fogged from the heat of the lights inside. It sold everything. Penny candy, sewing needles, model airplanes, school supplies, goldfish in plastic bags. Over twenty-five hundred of them. It was called Ben Franklin.
You walked in with a quarter and felt like a king. Wax lips. Root beer barrels. Mary Janes. Atomic Fireballs. Bazooka Joe with the comic strip inside. The lady behind the counter scooped them into a paper bag and weighed it on a scale. Past the candy, the toy aisle — balsa wood airplanes, jacks, marbles, cap guns that smelled like sulfur when they popped. Further back the sewing patterns, greeting cards, holiday decorations that came out like clockwork. The five-and-dime was the calendar of the year, marked in aisles.
But the most important thing that ever happened inside one of those stores was a twenty-seven-year-old kid from Oklahoma who walked through the door in 1945. His name was Sam Walton. He ran a Ben Franklin in Newport Arkansas and turned it into the top variety store in the state. Then his landlord kicked him out so his own son could take the store.
Sam moved to Bentonville and started over. He pitched Butler Brothers on discount retailing. They laughed. So in 1962 he opened his own store in Rogers Arkansas and called it Wal-Mart. Nineteen years later he opened Walmart number eighteen in Newport — the same town that kicked him out. The Ben Franklin on Front Street closed within months.
Walmart. Dollar Tree. Michael's. Three of the biggest retail companies in America were all born inside Ben Franklin stores. The five-and-dime trained its own executioners.
In 1996 Ben Franklin filed for bankruptcy. In December 2025 the last Ben Franklin in Juneau Alaska closed after more than fifty years. The owner said the world had changed around the store and there was nothing he could do to stop it.
If you remember walking in with a dollar in your pocket and walking out with a bag full of treasures, tell me about it.
