Our liquor store, Purdy's, was robbed on Labor Day weekend in 1992 and this aired in 1993. One woman, Irene, was working that evening. She was held at knife point and gave the man the money out of the register, which was what we were told to do in this type of situation. My mom, Gail Purdy Brophy, the owner at the time, was filmed for this production. The three men headed north on Broadway, and onto Rt. 50. They pulled over just before Exit 15. Two men were apprehended, and one man took off into the woods where the Residence Inn stands today. NYS Trooper Donald Britten, pursued the man on foot, and captured him. The money was recovered, the three men were arrested for armed robbery, and sentenced to seven years in jail.
When we got the call from the police that evening, my mom, dad, and I rushed downtown to the store. When I was waiting at the stoplight, on Gick Rd. and Rt. 50, I saw a lot of police cars and lights flashing as I looked left onto Rt. 50. I had no idea that this was the incident happening at the time. I took a right and went to Purdy’s to see Irene. Afterwards, we went to the police station and recovered the money that was stolen.
