Duchess, a heavily pregnant draft horse, wandered too far out onto the tidal flats. Exhausted and heavy with her foal, she sank into the thick, suctioning coastal mud. By the time Ranger Elias spotted her, the tide had turned.
The water was rising fast, threatening to drown her and her unborn foal. The rescue team had to become "mud men," fighting the earth for every inch to break the suction before the sea swallowed them all.
