The Sunday of the Publican and the Pharisee marks the official opening of the Triodion, the liturgical period that leads up to Great Lent and ultimately Pascha (Easter). The commemoration is centered on the Gospel of Luke (18:10–14), which tells the parable of two men praying in the Temple: a Pharisee, who is outwardly pious but consumed by pride, and a Publican (tax collector), who is a social outcast but possesses deep, humble repentance. By placing this Sunday at the very beginning of the pre-Lenten journey, the Church establishes humility as the essential foundation for all spiritual discipline. It serves as a spiritual "wake-up call," reminding the faithful that fasting and prayer are meaningless if they are performed with the self-righteousness of the Pharisee rather than the "broken and humbled heart" of the Publican.
Beyond the moral lesson of the parable, this Sunday functions as a pedagogical tool to shape the believer's interior disposition before the rigors of the Great Fast begin. To emphasize that Christian life is about God's mercy rather than legalistic merit, the Church prescribes a fast-free week following this Sunday, even on the traditional fast days of Wednesday and Friday. This liturgical "break" in the rules is a deliberate reminder not to boast in one’s own efforts. The hymns of the day, particularly "Open to me the gates of repentance," set the somber yet hopeful tone for the weeks ahead, teaching that the path to the Resurrection must begin with the honest recognition of one's own spiritual poverty.
