Hiroshige's era, the Edo period, was a peaceful and prosperous time with social order and economic prosperity. The arts were blossoming, also urban entertainment. By closing itself off from the outside world, Japan rediscovered itself and its culture. Hiroshige also benefited from this. Though he had a lot of prestige and popular success, he never achieved wealth and prosperity. Regardless of this, we still enjoy the beauty and expressiveness of his works today, including his fan prints, of which several dozen have been preserved.
