Block natural light — The living room should always be directly adjacent to the outside. Anything else will block daylight and ventilation.
Ignore circulation paths — Don’t plonk the dining table where people need to walk through to reach the outdoors.
Add split levels — Built-in trip hazards! If the site needs a level change, place it at the entry or exit, not inside the open plan.
Forget furniture planning — Design the kitchen with furniture layouts in mind. Always leave at least 1m circulation space around each zone.
Overlook entry points — Open plan still needs clear, direct circulation. Misaligned entry points make functional layouts nearly impossible.
Skip the lighting plan — Design lighting for the whole space and for each zone. The cook needs different lighting than someone watching TV.
