York, Whip Ma Whop Ma Gate to Low Petergate, Saturday 16th August 2025

Описание: As we continue our exploration of York, we set off early on an August Saturday morning from Whip-Ma-Whop-Ma-Gate - York's shortest street with the longest name - and take a walk through the historic city to visit the grave of notorious highwayman, Dick Turpin. Our walk takes us via Fossgate and Walmgate Bar, across Fishergate Bar and up into Piccadilly. As we return to York city centre, we walk through The Shambles and Kings Square before arriving at Low Petergate with York Minster's towers peering over the skyline.

During the walk we also take in Foss Bridge, The York Barbican, Spark, The Merchant Adventurers' Hall and views of Clifford's Tower.

Dick Turpin - real name, John Palmer - was hanged at York's Knavesmire (York Tyburn) for horse theft on April 7th, 1739.
