首钢 (Shougang) is one of the most significant abandoned steel mills in Beijing, China. Shougang employed tens of thousands of people during its peak operation, making it one of the largest employers in Beijing. However, the exact number of employees varied over the years based on the demand for steel and the modernization of the facility.

It was relocated to the outskirts of Beijing as part of the city’s efforts to reduce pollution and improve air quality for the 2008 Olympics. The old site of Shougang has since become a symbol of China’s industrial past and urban redevelopment efforts. The area is being transformed into a modern eco-friendly park and cultural hub, showcasing the country’s shift towards sustainable development and urban renewal.

The abandoned Shougang steel mill site was repurposed as the Shougang Big Air, a venue for the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing. The transformation involved extensive renovation and construction to create a state-of-the-art facility for the Big Air snowboarding and freestyle skiing events. The design incorporated elements of the old steel mill structures, blending industrial heritage with modern sports architecture. It serves as a testament to Beijing’s commitment to sustainability and repurposing urban spaces for innovative purposes.
