What’s the secret to treating the trickiest BPPV cases? It all comes down to Ewald's Laws! In this video, we break down how these three fundamental laws explain nystagmus direction, canal involvement, and why specific maneuvers work—giving you the tools to problem-solve atypical and challenging BPPV presentations.
It’s one thing to memorize treatment maneuvers, but we believe that it is better to understand why they work. With a solid grasp of Ewald’s Laws, you'll know how to adjust your approach when a patient presents with unusual symptoms, ensuring more effective and confident treatment.
💡 Key Concepts Covered in This Video:
✔️ The 3 Ewald's Laws and their role in vestibular function
✔️ How to interpret nystagmus patterns in BPPV
✔️ Why understanding canal dynamics helps you treat atypical cases
✔️ How to refine your BPPV maneuvers based on patient-specific needs
Important Note: In the lateral canal, when the cupula deflects away from the canal, it increases the firing rate of the vestibular nerve in that ear. When it deflects toward the canal, it decreases the firing rate. The opposite holds true for the anterior and posterior canals.
Now with understanding Ewald's 3 Laws we can figure out things like why the Supine Roll and The Bow & Lean Tests can direct us to the affected ear with BPPV affecting the lateral canal.
