In the urban area of Vienna, the river runs almost entirely in a deep concrete bed built in 1895-1899. Otto Wagner, architectural designer, had the idea to seize the opportunity and to cover the Wien River from Karlsplatz to Schönbrunn Palace, the Emperor's summer residence, and to build a large boulevard with the name Wienzeile. However, this idea was only realized over 2.1 km in the central part of the city and there and today there takes place the well known Naschmarkt – the food (and not only) market of Vienna.    • Naschmarkt Experience: Food, Fun, History ...  

As a result, a Wienzeile was not created as Wagner had hoped but two boulevards with this name were laid out around 1900 on both sides of the largely open-flowing Wien River. The Rechte Wienzeile was officially named in 1905. However, it was not until the 1930's that it was partially developed into a thoroughfare; in other parts it is still a side street in contrast to the fully developed Linke Wienzeile. Both of them – Rechte Wienzeile and Linke Wienzeile ends in the Vienna center on Karlsplatz and the renown Secession.    • The Famous Secession Building | Vienna in 4K  

Around 1960, traffic from the west to the city center still ran through Linzer Strasse and Mariahilfer Strasse, because the streets on the Wien River which adjoined the two Wienzeiles to the west, had not yet been developed. (Before the Vienna River was regulated, frequent flooding was the main reason why main roads were not routed near the river.) Twenty years later, the two Vienna Rows functioned as main roads.
