Reactions are a selection of expressions available in New Horizons, obtained by speaking to residents of the player's island. After a few days on the island, a resident will teach the player 4 initial reactions, while the remaining 40 are taught randomly on subsequent days. Only one Reaction can be learned per day, with the Reaction learned being based on the personality of the resident that teaches you the Reaction. Each personality type has 5 Reactions assigned to it, and one of the Reactions of each type may only be obtained if the player is best friends with that villager.

Two new Reactions, Haunt and Scare, were added in the 1.5.0 Fall Update. Nine new Reactions—Sit Down, Wave Goodbye, Take a Picture, Sniff Sniff, Work Out, Yoga, Here You Go, Excited, and Ta-da—have been added in the 1.6.0 Free Winter Update. Four new Reactions—Feelin' It, Let's Go, Viva, and Confetti—have been added in the 1.7.0 Free Festivale Update.

For the 2.0 update, multiple new reactions have also been added, and can be obtained via New Reactions Notebook, or by completing 50 group stretching every day: Posture Warm-Up, Arm Circles, Side Bends, etc.

Other new reactions not listed here are exclusive to the Happy Home Paradise DLC.
