Nell Carter played a housekeeper for a widowed police chief with three daughters in 'Gimme a Break!' (1981). The show ran for six seasons on NBC with its best ranking (#36) in season five. Along the way producers had to deal with the star's personal demons; at one point Liza Minelli had to fly her to a rehab center. Critics were split, with Tom Shales one of the naysayers objecting to sex jokes and stereotypes. A revamp in the final season firing the girls and changing the locale was not well received. Even so, the show has been a steady performer in syndication and just this year began a run on Cozi TV. There were two theme songs, both performed by Carter. The first (heard in seasons 1-2) was by Bob Christianson, Bob Garrett, and Marley Sims. The show's more familiar second theme, by Jay Graydon and Richard Page, took over in season three.
