The Bdoul tribe has been living inside Petra for over 500 years. In 1985 when Petra became the UNESCO World Heritage, the Al Bedoul people were relocated outside Petra with a promise that they'll get free housing, medical system and education for children.
On December 5th 2023 at 3:00 in the morning. the police stormed inside Petra and sent those who were sleeping inside the caves to the jail. From the second day onwards, they started to demolish most of the shops.
They say the shops were illegal, but the Albdoul has been living inside Petra for more than 500 years and many have been dependant on the tourism for their living. Some of these people have been running souvenir shops inside Petra for over 20 years but the government never warned them officially nor initiated talks with them for compensation.
If the government didn't want them to work in the tourism, why didn't they provide training or programs for assimilation so that they could acquire skills and integrate into the rest of the country Jordan? Why they took 40 years and suddenly forcefully took them out?
Now many Albdoul people have no jobs or income.
They receive no social security neither.
