In this video, we track how the world's busiest airports have changed from 2000 to 2025, ranked by total passenger traffic.
For years, global air travel was dominated by a small group of major hub airports. That stability was abruptly disrupted during the COVID-19 pandemic, when passenger volumes collapsed worldwide. This chart shows how different airports responded, which hubs fell the hardest, and which recovered fastest as global travel resumed.
Passenger traffic is measured as total passengers, defined by Airports Council International (ACI) as passengers enplaned, passengers deplaned, and direct-transit passengers. The chart includes the top 12 airports worldwide.
