The Kappal Pradakshinam (ship procession) at the historic Marth Mariam Archdeacon Pilgrim Church, Kuravilangad, is a 3-day tradition (Moonnu Nombu) commemorating the biblical story of Jonah and the whale. It involves parading a 40-foot wooden ship replica, usually carried by the Kadappoor community, to represent Jonah's journey, which is held in February.
Historical and Cultural Significance
Biblical Re-enactment: The ceremony reenacts the stormy seas as the wooden ship is moved back and forth three times around the church, with the Jonah figure eventually being thrown overboard to calm the waters.
The Church's History: The Marth Mariam Church, established in 105 A.D., is one of India's oldest and is closely linked to the belief that Mother Mary appeared to local children to instruct them to build the church.
Key Rituals: The festival, which attracts thousands, involves bringing the ship around the 1587 granite cross, often featuring the Kadappoor native community, with holy icons carried by the Kalikavu community.
The 'Moonnu Nombu' Connection: Unlike other feasts, the Moonnu Nombu (Three Day Lent) has a flexible date in the Church calendar but is a cornerstone of the church’s tradition.
The festival also highlights the "Muthiyamma" (Mother Mary) apparition, strengthening the faith of thousands who gather annually.
