Spring is progressing, the light is getting stronger, the sap is rising and days are stretching their necks towards summer. But there is still a cold wind. Today I walk three or four miles and take in the landscape comparing it to Saxon landmarks set out in Sawyer database’s charter number S862 (https://esawyer.lib.cam.ac.uk/charter....
As always I am trying to see the landscape both through contemporary and ancient eyes: I keep my eyes open for deer, hare and wild flowers.
Charter S862 is the charter of Littleton-upon-Severn (Lutletone) and it seems to be an authentic Saxon charter, however the main language, apart from that of the landmarks, is Latin and the landmarks themselves have a strong flavour of Middle English as much as Old English. Old English charters hold a lot of information about our landscape that has been forgotten about. I have done quite a few history walks now, you will see links at the end of the video.
I mention a Roman settlement in this video by the Aust cliff. If you are a local archaeologist or enthusiast and know where the excavation report is please get in touch, I would be very grateful.
