“I think the notion that the variants can emerge from one country or another is false and it's dangerous because you think that the problem is somewhere else. The virus is circulating so much right now that it's been evolving.”

“This is not a dominant variant worldwide, we classify it as a variant of interest because it has an increased growth rate and we expect that it will increase in detection around the world. But surveillance and sequencing remains quite limited. So it's very difficult for us to say what is circulating everywhere.”

“We're looking at several different characteristics of them growth rates and unique shape severity and our impact on interventions, how our diagnostics, therapeutics and vaccines work. So all of the variants that are in circulation, we are constantly monitoring those against those different characteristics. For EG.5 we see that it has an increased growth rate, which means it's more transmissible because of that growth rate increase and it's immune escape. So people are going to get infected. We see a similar level of severity as in it's not less severe or more severe could cause the full range of disease. But it's it's on our radar. It was a variant under monitoring since July because of this increased growth rate. And now we're detecting it in more countries. And we expect that in some countries it may become dominant.”

“We have to keep a close eye on it and we want more studies to be done to really evaluate more of its properties of whether or not there are any changes needed in our therapeutics or in our in our vaccine. So far, we don't, but it's one we have to watch.”
