On the trail of the ice age

The last great ice age reached its climax around 24,000 years ago. The Rigi was flowed around by the Reuss Glacier, which stretched far into the Swiss Plateau and has left clear traces. At that time there was a thick layer of ice in the valleys around the Rigi. Large quantities of debris and boulders (boulders from the Gotthard massive) were carried into our regions from the upper Reuss valley in Uri.

As the climate warmed up more and more and the glaciers slowly retreated, the glacier deposits resulted in undulating terrain. On the Seebodenalp there is a striking lateral moraine of the Reuss Glacier, which extends from the cable car station to Altruodisegg. The so-called Albert Heim Stone is an important contemporary witness of this and is the starting point for the circular trail on the traces of the Ice Age.

At the starting point of the Seebodenalp (parking lot in front of the St. Wendelinskapelle) there is a map showing the route of the route. It follows today's circular hiking trail Grodboden - Altruodisegg- Stockwald - Holderen - Grodstafel, where there are numerous rest areas and barbecue areas.
