Dr. Nathan Hutting - Person-Focused Self-Management Support

Описание: About: Musculoskeletal pain conditions are one of the leading contributors to disability worldwide. Pain conditions are influenced by multiple interacting factors. Musculoskeletal rehabilitation, including physiotherapy, needs to move towards a broader biopsychosocial understanding of musculoskeletal conditions and the delivery of high-value care for people with persistent pain conditions, in which a person-focused approach is a key feature. However, it has been reported that clinicians experience difficulties with integrating person-focused care principles into their clinical practice.

To support clinicians in overcoming some of the reported obstacles, recommendations aimed at putting principles of person-focused self-management support into practice will be presented. A framework supporting clinicians’ delivery of person-focused care in practice will be presented, consisting of three key-principles: A) a biopsychosocial understanding of the person’s experience; B) person-focused communication; and C) supported self-management. The framework includes three phases: 1) identification and goal setting, 2) coaching to self-management, and 3) evaluation. Building a therapeutic relationship underpins these phases and is an overarching element that weaves through the key-principles and phases of the framework.

After this session attendees will be familiar with the characteristics person-focused self-management support and will be able to include a person-focused approach in the management of people with musculoskeletal pain conditions.

Nathan Hutting, Ph.D., PT, is an associate professor at the HAN University of Applied Sciences in the Netherlands. He also works as a physiotherapist and manual therapist in a private practice.
His current research topics include long-term conditions, musculoskeletal conditions, self-management, patient-centered care, shared decision making, occupational health, and work-focused healthcare.

He is board member of the Dutch Association for Manual Therapy, is the member organization delegate of the Netherlands to the International Federation of Orthopaedic Manipulative Physical Therapists (IFOMPT), and is a member of the scientific college physical therapy of the Royal Dutch Society for Physical Therapy (KNGF).

Nathan has made many national and international presentations and chaired focused symposia at three World Physiotherapy congresses. He has published about 40 peer-reviewed articles and has been successful in obtaining more than 800.000 euro in research funding (as primary applicant or co-applicant).

He is also an associate editor of BMC Musculoskeletal Disorders and a member of the International Advisory Board of Musculoskeletal Science and Practice. Nathan is also a member of the Word Physiotherapy 2023 Congress program committee.
