Yom Teruah (also known as the feast of trumpets) is a day of blasts or shouting:
Also at your days of rejoicing, feasts and new moons, you are to blow on the trumpets over your burnt offerings and fellowship offerings. They will then be a reminder for you before Adonai your God. I am Adonai your God!”
— Numbers 10:10
On Yom Teruah, the trumpet was blown as a call for repentance. At the sounding of the shofar, it was often read:
“You who are asleep, wake up! You who are in a trance, arise! Search your doings and repent; Remember your creator”
