Did you know that the culture of trans and gender diverse people in the Pacific are extremely robust, colourful and vibrant? In Pacific culture, they are extremely integrated in their society, and fulfill important roles in their communities.
Many view even view the terms “transgender” and “gender diverse” as western concepts, preferring instead to call themselves identify as Fa’afafine (in the way of a woman) and Fa’atama (in the way of a man), Akava’ine (custodians of the culture), Palopa (general term for LGBTQIA) amongst many others.
