It features distinctive white cheek patches on their otherwise green plumage, with a brown head streaked with white. They are relatively small birds, measuring about 24 cm (9.5 inches) in length. These birds thrive in dense forests and well-wooded urban areas, and they are well-adapted to living near human settlements. Their diet consists mainly of fruits, though they also consume insects, particularly during the breeding season. White-cheeked barbets are known to nest in tree cavities, which they often excavate themselves, and they lay about 2-4 eggs per clutch.
They have a distinctive, repetitive call that can be heard throughout their habitat. As for how they produce this call, white-cheeked barbets, like other birds, have a specialized vocal organ called the syrinx located at the base of its windpipe. The barbet's repetitive call is a result of the precise control of airflow and muscle contractions in the syrinx.
The inflation of their neck is often observed during their vocalizations, especially during the breeding season. This inflation helps amplify their calls, making them louder and more resonant. These calls are crucial for attracting mates and defending their territory
These birds play a crucial role in their ecosystems by helping to disperse seeds and control insect populations.
