Lincoln Rockers (aka Grecian Rockers) are an intermediate project. This video is designed for people who have had experience caning a flat chair seat. What sets this chair apart from flat seats is the compound curves: an S curve at the sides and a concave curve at the top and bottom. Often the concave curve at the bottom is greater than the concave curve at the top. Therefore, getting proper tension can be very tricky. The bulk of the work in getting proper tension happens when setting the foundations steps 1-4, two verticals + 2 horizontals. The diagonals also create some tension in the panel so lacing the rocker back involves leaving a lot of slack in the cane strands.
This video can help a new weaver as well as experienced weavers, but the dozens of nuances of the caning process, especially for diagonals, are not covered. For more specific instructions on the 6 way pattern of traditional chair caning see our How to Weave a Round Laced Cane Chair video and also our Using a Caning Needle video. We highly recommend weaving flat panel before attempting the compound curve rocker back.
