Real change happens when you feel it in your bones.
When you no longer need to even think about it, you just do it.
That’s the insight Dr. Judson Brewer shares in this powerful TED Talk. He explains how we intellectually know that certain habits, like smoking or overeating, are bad for us. That’s our prefrontal cortex at work, the part of our brain responsible for reasoning and control.
But here’s the problem: the prefrontal cortex is also the first part of the brain to shut down when we’re stressed or overwhelmed.
This is why willpower alone often fails. We call it "cognitive control," but in high-pressure moments, logic takes a backseat to habit and emotion.
The key isn’t just knowing what’s wrong. It’s becoming disenchanted with the behavior itself. That shift, from head knowledge to gut-level awareness, is what leads to lasting change.
