They had 400 days to raise the Space Needle before the World's Fair opened. This is the story of the machines, and the ironworkers who built it with no nets and lost no one.

We walk up the Space Needle the way it was actually built, machine by machine. The record 467-truck foundation pour that hides most of the tower underground. The ordinary catalog steel bent into its famous hourglass legs with nothing but fire. The derrick crane that built the tower from inside and then had to be smuggled back out. And the men who rode the steel 600 feet up with no harnesses, through a Seattle winter, and every one of them came home.
