The Iranian regime's back is against a wall, having declined a U.S. long-term ceasefire proposal over the weekend and facing an indefinite naval blockade. It is also violating the ceasefire, according to the United States, by interfering with maritime trade in international waters—reportedly leading President Donald Trump to consider new airstrikes.
JINSA Generals and Admirals Program Participant GEN Joseph Votel, USA (ret.), former Commander, U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM), joined ABC News on April 12 to discuss.
General (ret.) Votel shared his analysis of this weekend's events, and how he anticipates the war's next phase playing out. He gave the optimistic assessment that "the U.S. military has moved forward substantially towards the military objectives that were identified for them."
General (ret.) Votel described how, based on his experience leading all U.S. forces in the region as former CENTCOM chief, clearing the Strait of Hormuz from threats "is within the military capabilities of the United States. He underscored, "I think we're approaching this properly, and very deliberately, and making sure that we set the conditions for success."
