Acute stress disorder (ASD) is a mental health condition that can occur in the aftermath of a traumatic event. It is characterized by a set of dissociative, intrusive, and avoidance symptoms that occur within one month of the traumatic event.
Symptoms of ASD include:
1. Intrusive thoughts, memories, or dreams related to the traumatic event
2. Dissociative reactions, such as feeling detached from one’s surroundings
3. Avoidance of reminders of the traumatic event
4. Negative mood, including feelings of fear, horror, anger, guilt, or shame
5. Hyperarousal, including difficulty sleeping, irritability, hypervigilance, and exaggerated startle response
If these symptoms persist beyond one month, a diagnosis of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) may be considered. Treatment for ASD often involves psychotherapy, particularly cognitive-behavioral therapy, to help individuals process the traumatic event and develop coping strategies. Medications may also be prescribed to alleviate symptoms such as anxiety or insomnia.
